2025 Golden State Warriors Preseason Preview
The Golden State Warriors finished last season with a record of 47 wins and 36 losses and failed to make it out of the play-in tournament after finishing with the 10th seen in the Western Conference. Entering his 11th season as head coach, Steve Kerr will look to lead his team back to the playoffs.
The Golden State Warriors will look different this year, after the departure of Klay Thompson. Also leaving the Warriors this past off season after a one year stint in the Bay Area. The Warriors look to replicate their production in the aggregate by offseason additions Buddy Hield and Kyle Anderson. They will join a large veteran core that also include Steph Curry, Draymond Green, Andrew Wiggins, Kevon Looney, and Gary Payton II - all players with 8 or more years of experience.
Rounding out the roster will be the Warriors young players. Of specific interest will be Jonathan Kuminga, who did not agree to earn extension before the recent deadline and, after showing the ability to produce at a higher volume on offense, will be on himself to play into a larger contract this season. Fans will also watch for the second year growth of Brandin Podziemski, who finished 5th in rookie of the year voting last year.
The big question mark for the Warriors this season will be how they handle the big men in the west, as the Warriors currently do not have a single player above 6’9” on their normal roster (seven foot rookie Quinten Post is on a two way contract).
The loss of Thompson will give us the most jarring new iteration of a Steph Curry roster that we’ve seen, and next year’s Golden State roster could again be quite different. In addition to Kuminga becoming a restricted free agent, De’Anthony Melton, Gary Payton II, Keyon Looney, and Lindy Waters III will all be unrestricted free agents next year. Aside from Curry the Warriors players are on fairly economical contracts, and depending on their choices regarding their free agents could have a sizable amount of cap space next offseason to retool once more to make a run during the Curry era.
