2025 San Antonio Spurs Preseason Preview
Last season the San Antonio Spurs finished the season with a record of 22 wins and 60 losses, and identical record to what the team achieved the year before. Fans of the Spurs aren’t too concerned with the lack of winning recently however, they got to watch 71 games of Victor Wembanyama - and it looks like the future is bright in San Antonio.
In his Rookie of the Year season, the 7’4” center from France scored 21.4 points per game, collected 10.6 rebounds, and lead the league with 3.6 blocks per game en route to a second place finish in Defensive Player of the Year voting. Wembanyama will look to improve his offense, and aiding him in that effort will be Chris Paul, who won a Rookie of the Year award of his own during the 2005-06 season. Paul is entering his 20th in the NBA, and the 5 time NBA assists per game leader could make another push by tossing the ball to Victor. Joining Chris Paul on the Spurs this season is Harrison Barnes, who played 82 games each of the past two season for the Kings.
Together Chris Paul and Harrison Barnes have played 2,183 regular season games in the NBA. The rest of the Spurs roster has played 1,896 games combined (Head Coach Greg Popovich has coached 2209). The young Spurs team is looking to establish chemistry and rhythm with the guidance from their vets as they wait to see just how high Wembanyama’s ceiling will be.
Sooner or later the Spurs will decide that it is time to compete by putting key pieces around their young franchise cornerstone. They will likely want to establish the core of their future roster before Wembanyama is extended for the 2027-28 season, as this will maximize their flexibility and they should have no issues attracting talent in free agency to come play with the generational Frechman. The Spurs front office made their first long term commitment to this core by extending Devin Vassell through the 2028-29 season. San Antonio has a large number of draft picks and preferred swap options and it seems, at least on paper, that the Spurs will soon be a problem in this league for many years to come.
